My grandfather is not a candidate for bypass surgery why?

hi my grandfather 3 arteries are all clogged please help me to get more information on this all my family is worried he is like my dad to me. how come he cannot have surgery and how long could he live without having surgery. dr said his alteries are like twisted or so ... ?? what other options does he have please help since i will tell them what i got from you guys
Answer:
In order for a bypass to be effective, there has to be a short area that is blocked. If there are multiple blockages along the artery, it can't be bypassed (the blood flow will just meet another obstruction)

Same thing for stents.

The cardiac surgeons know which patients can be helped by surgery and which cannot.

There are medical treatments for coronary artery disease, and he will need to be followed by a cardiologist for his disease. The aim of medical treatment is usually to reduce the amount of oxygen the heart requires, so that the blood flow that the heart gets is enough. This can be accomplished by keeping the heart rate slow, and maximizing the pumping ability of the heart using medications.

The cardiologists know this, and you don't need to tell them anything. You need to listen to what they say, and ask questions so that you understand what is going on. Don't be afraid to ask why certain treatments are or are not appropriate.

Best of luck to you.
How old is your grandfather? Does he have diabetes? Does he smoke?
Apparently he has some anatomical anomaly that makes the procedure of little value.
See the book 40 Something Forever by Arline and Harold Brecher for some alternatives to the bypass operation.
Also check out Miracle Cures by Jean Carper and read the chapter on Pro-Fibe.
Good luck!
sorry to hear about your grandfather ,my husband has several blocked arteries in his heart his main artery was blocked they put 2 stents in his heart but said he was not candidate for open heart surgery due to the seriousness of his cardio vascular disease ,his heart would not hold out for the surgery ,last month he had a stroke due to blocked artery in his neck they did clean it out but now the other side is getting the same way one week and 4 days after surgery he had several blood clots that landed him back in surgery and several days in CCU he can no longer work and he is only 55 i wish you and your grandfather the best my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family
When you say Grandfather i'll assume he is over (60) years of age. Age is usually not a problem, however surgeons always estimate success of the procedure, and likelyhood/ risk of complications. There are multiple factors, also to be considered is the surgeon himself. Surgeons are very particular, due to their profession they have habit of being extremely selective about who they operate on. It sucks. Surgeons to me are exactly like automotive machanics. Sometimes you'll find a real good one.

The reason the question was asked if your grandfather has diabetes is because diabetes affects healing and viablity of veins and arteries. When a heart by-pass procedure is conducted, sometimes veins/ arteries are removed from the lower extremities to replace clogged arteries around the heart. Another factor is location of the clots. As you know the closer to the heart the smaller arteries get. This making it extremely difficult to repair. Twisted arteries? Thats a new one. To answer how long he could live, well to be honest it really depends upon his diet, exercise, personal habits, etc. Secondly, Which arteries are clogged, some arteries around the heart are way more important than others. If I was you I would research and ask your grandfather questions about what his diagnosis was. Second have him change personal habits. His doctor more than likely placed him on a strict regiment of blood thinners and anticoagulants. Menaing if I spelled it right, so his blood will not clot easily. However he is subsequently subceptable to infections, and bleeding out. Needless to say solicit second opinions from other credible heart institutions and doctors. Where ever you live there has to be other experts beside this opinion. And remember everything in medicine is a medical opinion and not necessarily fact.
